Rap for two reasons

I hate the genre
I hate rappers

Elektronica is a close second since I don't even know what the hell that is.

Ah, thanks Bolo, at least I can claim one dictionary definition as it being music 8)

In honor of it being dictionaryized and my appreciation for the genre (when it's done well), I've composed a little rappal homage to rap

I passionately hate modern rap/hip-hop like 50 cents etc. But that's more because the "culture" that goes with it. Having said that, one cannot claim that it's not music. There's music/a beat and there's rhythmic performed "poetry" on top of that. Both have musical qualities.
Of course I am not saying that I think 50 cents is a "musical" guy because he's not. Neither are some hiphop producers like Dr. Dre. They make shitty music, but it's still music.

And to all the people claiming that you need musical instruments to make music, and that a computer is not a musical instrument. Quit living in the 19th century... A computer in the hands of a group like Lamb is just a means to an end...a beautiful end.

It's all music, you snobs. Not liking it doesn't stop it from being music. :D

Oh, and I like at least one example out of every genre listed above.

I confess I like less Rap than any other listed genre though... but Public Enemy is great stuff. I respect Rap when it has a meaningful message beyond glorification of the thug lifestyle, materialism, and misogyny.

Chuck D wrote:I'm not a hooligan
I rock the party and
Clear all the madness, I'm not a racist
Preach to teach to all
'Cause some they never had this
Number one, not born to run
About the gun...
I wasn't licensed to have one
The minute they see me, fear me
I'm the epitome - a public enemy
Used, abused without clues
I refused to blow a fuse
They even had it on the news
Don't believe the hype...

I've found that any kind of music is good music if you give yourself some time to learn how to listen to the type of music in question. Some types of music just take getting used to to be enjoyable. :)

The old joke is, if you play a Country song backwards, his truck gets returned, his wife takes him back, and his dog comes home.

I've heard the Fugees, not impressed. Lauryn Hall, even less impressed. Johnny Cash impressed me by doing something original, and really good.

January 27
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who is widely recognized as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music and who excelled at all the musical genres of his era, was born this day in 1756.

This is serendipity. I get a "On this day" history email from Encyclopaedia Britannica. This was the biography of the day. The part that made me laugh was when I mis-read the meaning of Western music.

For if I drank, the toast should be
To blighted fortune health and fame.

You can't really hate electronica as it's not even a real genre. It's just a word some American music journalists started using because they want to label music in neat little boxes.

If you don't know anything about electronic music (like me :D), check Ishkur's guide... it's an amazing site that's fun to explore if you're not into the music.

http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html

For the record, I am mostly into honest guitar music. I hate trance, hardcore and slightly dislike house. On the other hand, I'm into dark ambient, ambient, trip hop, and especially electro. I don't know if I like or dislike jungle. Frankly, electronic music is so diverse these days that using labels like this even is hard.

Tangleroot's music taste timeline below:

Pop -> Heavy Metal -> Death Metal -> Goth Metal / Goth Rock -> Alternative Rock -> Grrl Rock -> Electronic Music -> Everything goes (except country and fusion jazz).

So, what I'm trying to say here is that keep an open mind. Even if you're totally into growling black metal, you should check out certain branches of electronic stuff. You might love it.

Edited to add stuff.

You could probably branch well to electronical stuff by listening to Norwegian stuff like Arcturus, Ulver and Kovenant then.... For really freaky stuff I'd go for Arcturus' La Masquerade Infernale (1997). Unless you're into that wimpy american death metal.

See, I remember things from my youth!

EDIT: Also, for mix of electronical stuff and raw metal, I'd go for the band Samael and their record Passage (1996).

Heh, Darkfire. Just a personal preference of mine. When I was into death metal, I never liked the American style, but preferred the European/Swedish/Norwegian stuff. They have some distinct differences. Hard to remember actual record names or band names actually.. I think 'Edge of Sanity', 'Unanimated', 'Rotting Christ' and 'Bolt Thrower' were some bands I listened to at least, all have probably quit ages ago.
