I discovered muds back in 1990 when at OU, somebody was running a pretty generic LPmud named Rebirth on the engineering computer network mainframe. When that got shutdown I unfortunatly, for my grades, discovered Lostsouls (which is still around) which was just awesome. Wish some of the developers of that mud would make a PW.

I still have a Nightmare MUD running on one of my servers. I've had it since 99 and it was in the previous hosts hand for a few before that. It still averages 10 players a day.

JediMUD! Now there's a blast from the past! I played on it for a month or two, got the bug and we started our own, CajunMUD. Cut my teeth on C by coding on the MUD. Ran it completely under our faculty sysadmin's nose on the department's UNIX box after she pissed off the student who was the real sysadmin and he hardcoded a password into su.

EDIT: In fact, we actually have Cajun running on the box we're going to be/we are running Greyhawk on.

I knew Bruno was cool... but... hell yeah.

*cheers*

I did some MUDs back in highschool, but I was more into the BBS scene. *cheers for TradeWars*

Oh, did I forget to mention that I was SysOp of a BBS back around the same time? :) Lost in Time. Even met my wife through my BBS. TradeWars was fun. We actually had the source code and were working on streamlining it before I headed off to grad school. Never followed through. I remember when I got my hands on brand spanking new 28.8 modem from Hayes before the general public laid eyes on them through some program they had for SysOps. Oh the memories.

Okay, here U go for all the people who want to know what MUD is...

Here's the link to the website for Northern Lights, the AberMUD I started playing on back in 1992:

http://www.ludd.luth.se/mud/aber/northern_lights.html

It's still up and running, so check it out!

MUDs were where my love for online gaming began. Text-only adventuring where you would interact with objects or other players by typing in simple commands. I discovered MUDs in college and once spent almost an entire summer playing Northern Lights 8-14 hours a day! :good:
I still hop in once a year or so for old time's sake.

One of the most interesting features of AberMUDS was that the world had a finite number of quests and useable objects. The game had to be reset periodically once the majority of the quests were completed. Everyone had to get together into one area, and a Wizard (DM) would countdown from ten and reset the game. Since all player inverntories reset at that time, too, we would all start each game racing around to try to be the first person to grab the best weapons and armor.

All you people and your old-fangled Diku and LPMuds. Though, I suppose most every mud is derived from some codebase or another. I myself am most familiar with SMAUG, albeit quite heavily modified. I suppose it should be slightly embarassing, but I played on a Dragonball Z mud for about five years before it closed down about a month and a half ago. About the time I started playing here, actually. 's where I learned how to roleplay, really. Before that was this other MUD called Aturion Dynasty or something like that. Don't quite remember what kind it was. Had aliens though. Otherwise, pretty much just SMAUG. Which is derived from Diku. So, I suppose from the limited list of choices listed, Diku.
