What kinds of MUD's did you play MOST?

PostAuthor: Orleron » Sat Dec 03, 2005 5:38 am

What kinds of MUD's did you play most?

There were really early muds, like MUD1 and 2 and AberMUD.

Then from AberMUD came Diku- LP- and Tiny-

From Tiny came the MUCK's and MOO's

From combinations of Tiny and LP- came the MUSH's

I was a hard core DikuMUD player who MUD'ed my freshman college GPA in 1993 from about 3.4 to about 2.8. Wo0T! I played mostly on JediMUD, HexOnyx, and Sojourn as "Slice".

JediMUD! Now there's a blast from the past! I played on it for a month or two, got the bug and we started our own, CajunMUD. Cut my teeth on C by coding on the MUD. Ran it completely under our faculty sysadmin's nose on the department's UNIX box after she pissed off the student who was the real sysadmin and he hardcoded a password into su.

EDIT: In fact, we actually have Cajun running on the box we're going to be/we are running Greyhawk on.

I tried first MUD but I was too young ( something like 12 years old) and second was lightest wersion but I was studying at this time; It's great Idea with cloths that you can wear 3 or 4 parts of the same cloth, I mean bra, t-shirt, sweater and leather and all this sruff could be magical. Waiting for this on NwN :D

Modified DikuMUD "Eye of the Storm", followed by Eye of the Storm II (a breakoff from the original from some of the imms, 3 of who I knew) and then "Tornado of Souls", more modification of the code, and lucky me, I was a builder and then in charge of building... and remember writing a script for my telnet program to go through each room and change some flags for them  Dunno why they didn't just do it from the source end, but hey...probably had something to do with the way things were stored in a flat file.

Hmmm popped back into a mud a few years ago, before NWN came out and found an old friend there and she was an Imm again. Funny that.

I always loved the need for "MORE!!!" in a MUD. it went from "you graze" and "you scratch" and "you hit" for x damage to "you DISEMBOWEL" and "YOU <<<<TOTALLY EVISCERATE~!>>>" ...oh man. And 100 levels wasn't enough.

Yes I played Grunt :D Also played a minotaur fighter, and an illithid necromancer...

All on a 486DX50 and dialup.

I think DIKU or LP. Memories are kind of fuzzy though.

Oops, should have chosen the MUSH option. I saw DikuMUDs first, though, and am lacking c|_|, so I picked that.

[ramble that you don't have to read]
I've been MUSHing 2001-present, and I played AfterShock (an ACK!MUD, which is a Merc derivative, which is a Diku derivative...) 2002-2004, or thereabouts. It died because of overparanoid imms the first time; a few others forked the MUD, and then didn't give a damn, so it fell apart. MUSHes are awesome, though, particularly M*U*S*H, which is sort of the public test/development/support MUSH for the PennMUSH codebase, and just an awesome place to hang out.
[/ramble that you don't have to read]

In case you noticed, I came into the MUD scene very late... but look at it this way, I was four when Orl was a college freshman.

spent 5 good years of my life in this place, the last two years as an admin. Bloody great fun.

http://www.achaea.com/main.html

After that, I built en entire city for another mud. Bzillion rooms. Quite ambitious and I lost steam towards the end, but I made it under deadline.

The pictures in our heads often are much grander than the pictures painted on graphic muds. The first tile sets for NWN were, in my opinion, not an improvement to the old text muds at all.

I fear NWN2. I get the feeling Im going to get sucked in and be a builder again. eek!

I played a few different MUDs back in high school (though I'll be damned if I can remember what ones). My high school gave any student in the district free 14K internet access. Once I got to college, I really didn't make time for it anymore (and Goldeneye had the dorm floor's attenition) :D

Around the time most of my friends in college were playing MUDs, I was playing angband, moria, nethack, larn, and the like. I didn't get into online games until UO came around, although I did play a mud on two or three occasions.

I don't think I like the lack of a 2d axis in muds (you are in this room or you are not in this room, but you can't stand in this room over by the wall), but I couldn't really tell you why.

I played on AmberMUSH a bit when I was in college (based on Zelazny's Amber novels). I also played a small mud called Dark Powers or something similar based on the Rolemaster system. Lots of fun with the crits and such. Voted MUSH since I spent more time there.

Speaking of roguelikes, I still play kmoria on my palm when waiting at the doctor, dentist, airport, breakfast table...
