Avlis policy on: Sharing Crafting Recipes

PostAuthor: Sylvan Phoenix » Tue Jul 06, 2004 9:23 pm

I would like to clarify the Avlis crafting recipe restrictions that have been brought up in the proposal for a free crafting guild in Avlis. A while back the team ruled that guilds could not post master recipe lists in the forums for all members to see and learn from. For the most part all guilds pass their information in character, which is how it should be. We have further clarified this rule.

All Avlis crafting recipes must be learned/discovered in game

Distributing a master list of all known recipes is a flagrant violation of this. I don't care who you share your knowledge with as long as you do it in game. If you want to reveal secrets for nothing, that's your business. But there will be no listserv of crafting recipes.

This is a roleplaying server and while we can't enforce certain aspects of crafting that we'd like to, we can certainly set OOC guidelines that you should follow. Yes, there are ways you can get around this but you are violating the spirit of Avlis and this server's atmosphere. Because of limiting game mechanics I cannot create a realistic crafting experience. All recipes are boiled down to a list of ingredients and quantities. IC this is not so simple. Being a master alchemist is much more than slapping down half a dozen ingredients and choosing your recipe. There's skill involved in mixing certain ingredients, under certain conditions (heat, pressure, friction, etc), and observing the changes. This is why you have to have a certain level in a craft to even attempt a certain recipe. All trades are handled this way IC. If I could enforce it I'd require you to either experiment to discover your own recipes -OR- get a mentor to teach it to you.

Hopefully this clarifies the team view of this issue.

Cheers,
Sylvan

Further clarification by example:

BAD

* Player A emails/PM's/IM's/posts on the internet a list of recipes to one or more players (This includes both ICly and OOCly...sorry, has to be that way or else people will mess with us.)

GOOD

* Players in a guild roleplay the entire sequence of learning a recipe one at a time, as is done in most current crafting guilds. (preferred)

* Character A in game somehow dictates a recipe to Character B, one recipe at a time, so Character B can record it somewhere PRIVATE (like in a txt document on their own computer) for their own personal use.

In game means IN GAME, as in while playing NWN and using NWN to convey recipes to each other on the talk channel. It does not mean over email or PM or in forums.

RE: Recipe Sharing

If I came up with a relatively easy to implement solution that would simulate recipe discovery and distribution in game using the crafting system would you consider useing it? I could draft something for you that might be acceptable, if you are open to suggestion.

Wrath

That is my opinion, not nessasarily anyone else's opinon, might just be, but that would be a coincodence, and damnit, sometimes the crap I write is not even my opinion either.

"In-game" includes the use of the scribes to create distributable recipe sheets I assume?

An option available to some people in-game is that we can get books published. This works out very expensive, but if people were willing to pay, could they get a book of up to, say, five recipes published? Expensive, especially with the option to have it spawn on bokshelves, but possible nevertheless. Allowed or no, if a DM willing to do the work can be found?

That would be acceptable, but I'm going to rely on the guilds to control the distribution of such books and documents. They need to thwomp anyone who would abuse it.

The team has received some emails concerning this ruling above.

Let me make it clear; If you are caught passing on recipe information by any other method than in-game and ICly, you will be IJ'ed pending further action against you. Possibly banning.

Orl and Sylvan have made it extremely clear on the how this matter is to be handled. Please don't try test the teams patience by sidestepping the rule. About the only exception to make a written 'cookbook of recipes' would be to dictate to an IG scribe and make copies of it.

The emphais of our rule is in-game, and of course the emphasis IN-GAME is that you're RPing. Sure you could technically spout off recipes at Elf gate, but other crafters will take note and their IC reactions might be unpleasant for you.

That is ok. Keep in mind that the recipes are more than just "stick x, x and x in here and press the make button." Some people will RP this more, and others less. What you should not do however, is stand in a public place and spout off recipes without any roleplaying. To continue your example:

GOOD:
Bob: Let's go find a place to work and I'll show you how to make kits.
Joe: Sounds good. Then I can show you how to make the potions.
*they find a place to work*
Bob: You take 112 x, grind it up and mix it with 17 y. Then fold the mixture in some z - just 3 or so - and package it up.
Joe: You crush about 5 p, mix in some s - maybe a dozen - slowly and then stir for five minutes before pouring it over a base of 92 q. Let it cool and pour it into a container!
Sally: *hiding in the shadows jots down the two new recipes she just learned ICly*

BAD:
Bob: You need 112 x, 17 y, and 3 z to make those kits.
Joe: You need 5 p, 11 s, and 92 q to make potions.
Bob: Bye.
Joe: Bye.
Sally: *jots down two new recipes she just learned OOCly as she walked by*

*Bump*

If I see someone doing this IC then I will be very likely to give you a hefty cookie in a certain craft.

If I see someone just spouting off ingredients then you will likely get a negative cookie.

Thanks.

The team.
I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice-mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?
