This post comes weeks too late, obviously... but real quickly:
Two different ways to look at the poll:
1 Greatest WARRIOR? -- or --
2 Who would win in a fight?
Conan, is the easy answer to number 1... I mean, if you've read the Howard books... there is a scene I remember where Conan is fighting an entire army, as his own army had been slaughtered already, and they cannot bring him down. Hours go by, and he just keeps slaying more and more warriors. Eventually they have to bring in the standard counter-- for Conan, its magic. A wizard is brought in, who casts a quick spell, and thats it for Conan, he gets captured.
Number 2 would probably be Elric... again, for those who have read all the books (yes I've read dragonlance, and the Drizz't books too, etc etc ad nauseum), this is a hero who in Book 6 (Stormbringer) actually goes one on one with a GOD. Xiombarg, Lord of Chaos and God of many planes of existence, is defeated in melee combat by Elric. Not to mention the whole ring of kings thing, where he can call on All of the spirit gods, or his sword which can fight on its own if he commands it to, flying around and sucking out peoples souls on a whim... OR his being the most masteful sorceror on the planet... yes, Elric would be unstoppable, but much of his power is due to his magic, his ring, his sword... and not his skill as a warrior.
I made the mistake of allowing 'Elric' to appear as an NPC in an extra-dimensional watering hole once, in a campaign I was running. One of the party members decided he HAD to have Stormbringer as his own, so you can guess what happened...
We had to waste 45 minutes while he rolled up a new character.
Just my 2 pence.
