Avlis 15th B-Day reminder for July 1st

PostAuthor: Gorgon » Tue Jan 03, 2017 11:20 am

It might be a bit early for this, but it can't hurt if people want to prepare some plans for it. According to Orleron, Avlis will be celebrating its 15th birthday on July 1st this year.

I added a calendar event for it (though I may have added a yearly one already, since they don't show this far ahead).

So... does anyone else wonder where all that time went?

It seems my 14th Anniversary will be on 7th February, at least as far as the Forum is concerned

Fourteen very happy years. May there be many more :prost:

Giving this a bump in case the team, or others, want to make any plans. Might be a good excuse to do another newsletter/reunion type thing, and advertise a bit more, especially with summer stealing away our players every year.

I'd be happy to help with that any way I can, if needed.

Remembering Why We Fought.

My idea for a theme is the wars that have shaped Avlis. Participants are invited to suggest, or arrange for themselves, events related to wars on Avlis. Historians might tell tales of lesser-known wars, there could be quizzes, even recreations of famous battles with healers at hand. Crafts could include famous weapons from some of these wars, bards could be encouraged to craft performances that summarize some wars... and imagine the costumes!

PCs will obviously choose whether or not to focus on the good or the bad, to celebrate the joy of newfound peace or deplore the loss of opportunity.

These are the notable wars I found on the Timeline article on the wiki:

Time of The Dawning – 500 P.O.D. – 100 P.O.D.
Great War
Demonspawn War
First Fairy War

The Age of Darkness – 1825 O.D. – 2148 O.D.
M’Chek-T’Nanshi War
Tri-Fief Wars
Drotid-T’Nanshi Conflict
Second Fairy War

The Age of Rebirth – 2148 O.D. – 2587 O.D. (A1 Era)
Second and Third Demonspawn Wars

Re: Avlis 15th B-Day reminder for July 1st

PostAuthor: Xaila » Tue Mar 28, 2017 4:14 am

I was thinking on making a brainstorming post and forgot that there already sort of is an Avlis 15th post.

Before I get into any ideas and such, I just wanna address potential issues with the date of July 1 itself. I'm not sure it's the most ideal to run a big reunion weekend on. July 1 is Canada Day for our lovely northern neighbors and just a few days before Independence Day on the 4th for us 'Muricans. I'm actually not sure how much of a big deal Canada Day is beyond it being a national holiday, but I know that a lot of people in the states travel or do family/party things around the 4th. So it might be wise to do stuff on another weekend, OR spread things out to be like a week- or month-long thematic thing.

It might be an issue for those who make a 4 day weekend out of it, since the 4th is a Tuesday, but it could also get more players. Hard to guess there, with the age of our player-base, especially the ones who would be joining a reunion. It is just another long weekend up here in Canada, like every other monthly one (holidays are Avlis days for me anyway  ).

According to Gurky's timeline I started to play during the M'Chek vs T'Nanshi war. Which, If I remember correctly is exact.
.. And according to my memory, this was the perfect time to begin playing, so many awesome players began playing at that time as well. Some I missed a lot, some that I had Awesome RP time! I would definitely return at this age, and restart with the experience I have now. Would I play Edge a different way? maybe? maybe not? I don't think I will remort him he is too much a pillar in the game, and ''in my life... seriously'' to thinking about it.

I might be due for a family thing with him though.. a couple months ago I started to play FFXIV, and the character I'm playing is called Kerryan Dravenmore... lol.. and while I'm at it, most of the games I'm playing are called Edge.

Anyway, what a community of good people!!!

Cheers!!! I'll call Happy B'day on the 1st of July! }8)

It's probably very possible some people who are able to would take the the extended weekend with the 4th being on Tuesday. It seems like a good thing to put out to a poll, like the trade fair weekends. Unfortunately I actually wasn't around for last year's reunion so I'm not sure how those dates were selected.

There's also the Generation page for figuring out where you fit in. It hasn't been updated in a long time, since things kinda slowed down a lot in the past decade, but might be fun to try adding a few more.

I joined a month after the end of the 4th gen in Oct 2003, so early 5th for me. It is still amazing thinking about how much went on in those first few years, compared to now. Having 4 generations worth of changes in a single year before I joined is pretty nuts.

I must be second or third generation - Feb 2003. Can anyone please confirm whether that makes me 2nd or 3rd? X:|

My 64th Birthday will be on 25th July, but we probably don't want to wait that long to celebrate the 15th Birthday of Avlis

The third generation started when Avlis was linked to Mythos on May 22, 2003, so you'd be second gen in Feb 2003. Second generation is from ~around~ mid-August/September, 2002 to May, 2003.

Like I said, a lot changed in those early years. You are 3 generations before me and only 8 months older, though I sometimes try to say I'm 4th gen + a month, just to sound cooler. :P
I didn't get any of the uber 4th gen loot (directly), so I guess 5 does fit.

I remember Mythos (Shudders) so I was definitely before that. Second Gen is not bad

Sure, parties are fun! But... how about a plot kickoff? The next setting of Avlis? Make the "15th Anniversary Celebration" go on for the full month, and make it more than "Avlis didn't turn off the servers permanently for 15 years!" It's a good time to coincide a potential uptick in players with the next major set of events/backdrop of Avlis for people to play their characters in. Three and a half months gives the DM team time to brainstorm, get a rough outline of the over-arching setting, and contribute details to it.

Yup, I was gonna bring that up at some point too! Of course there needs to be celebratory stuff, but...speaking for myself, I'd love to see something kick off that gives everyone something to do and talk about. Parties need subjects to gossip about after all.

I unfortunately wasn't at the reunion and don't know what went on there event wise, alas. I've heard it was a really cool weekend. But...and I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, things have seemed to stagnate since then. Didn't the reunion come right around the end of a world plot actually? Again, just speaking for myself, but what got me to log back in after a long hiatus was that I saw evidence that Sunscream was kicking off some phat mage stuff that seemed really relevant to my interests. I liked that it made aspects of the setting seem alive again...like there's all this stuff going on in the world that can be talked about, researched, tin-foil hat conspiracy theoried, etc. Would love to see more of this, and I think it would lure some folks back AND get them to stick around a bit longer.

Just my 2c. I dunno what kind of discussing goes on behind the curtains these days.
