The Character Goal Database

PostAuthor: Sloth King » Wed Mar 25, 2015 11:13 pm

The Character Goal Database (Working Title):

What is it?
The purpose of this system is fairly simple; to provide a framework through which players might share details about their character's goals, values and beliefs with the team. This is so that DMs can rapidly inform themselves of characters they intend to be DMing and can better tailor a narrative to a particular PC's values or goals. This is not a request for dm attention. Submitting to this database is not a guarantee that any of it will be actualised, it's to let the team know what your character is working towards.

How does it work?
Simple! You answer the questions and PM the answers to the Dungeon Masters. Make sure the PM is titled 'CGD: ~Insert Character's Name Here~'. Your answers get stored teamside as a reference for all DMs.

When do I get all the sick requests I made?
This is not a request system. Nothing is guaranteed. It is a system to allow for the opportunity for a narrative to be tailored to your PC; it is not a promise that one will be.

How much do I write? What does this question really ~mean~?
As much or as little as you like. Skip a question, give one word answers, write a novel (please don't actually write a novel). The more information, the more there is to work with. The questions are left vague intentionally. Answer as you feel appropriate.

But my character changes over time! Wont these answers trap me in boxes forever?
Nope! The date gives a reference for how long ago this was a record of your PC so a DM will know when to consider a collection of answers out of date AND you may submit a fresh answer sheet whenever you feel appropriate (within, y'know, reason).

Yo, all of this seems pretty legit, but how soon until I get my long term goal of becoming the newest Cha'reth?
No guarantees. No promises. Providing answers MIGHT mean DMs work to provide opportunities for goals to be achieved or desires to be pursued, but it might not. This is just to provide a structured communication system. Also, aim for realistic goals. Ambitious is good, 'replace Mikon and impose a literalistic balance' is not so good.

The Form:
Character Name:

Board Name:

Date:

1. What are your character's core values?

2. What motivates your character?

3. What does your character fear most?

4. What guild and religious affiliations does your PC have?

5. What PC allies or enemies does your character have?

6. What is/are your character's short term goal(s)?

7. What is/are your character's long term goal(s)?

8. What is/are your character's lifetime goal(s)?

So! Fill that in, PM it to the Dungeon Masters and you're away.

Ok, am I missing something here, or do we just PM it to ~all~ DMs?? Or is there certain PM account this would go to?

Please PM it to the Dungeon Masters group. To do this:

1) Go to Compose Message.
2) On the compose message page, to the right of where you add in individual names find the section labeled, 'groups.'
3) Select 'Dungeon Masters' from the group list.
4) Click on the 'Add' icon to the left.

Your message will now be sent to the Dungeon Masters group where it will arrive in All DMs' inboxes.

This is such a great idea. Now I need to compose a handful of PMs.

Would it be easier if we put the character name along with the words 'character goals' as the subject?

I totally just saw where it said what to title the PM, I am an idiot today. :)

Yep! People have also been using the form "CGD: Character Name". Whichever way you choose, we'll open it, see what it is, and file it, so it doesn't really matter. :)

Ok, thank you for that bit of information and I blame my poor dual brain for missing that fairly obviously bit of information, so there. Thanks again.

I've noted a few new and returning players and characters.

Give me your secrets.

Bumping this to encourage submission to the database.

Its well worth it. I sent one in for E and have had one of her little likes used. it was fun and engaging. Though I don't intend to send stuff through for my characters who aren't around so much as they dont have any long term goals. I dunno, perhaps I will just for fun hehehe

Can we add to our existing Character Goal Database as we progress our characters?

Yes. Feel free to resubmit a CGD questionnaire for your PCs as needed. Just throw a date in the subject line or the text.

I would like to find IG a trainer of the blackguard for the temple of Maleki. I will start out as a fighter and basically sort of squire myself to one and work on gaining levels. I hope this is the beginning or some interesting RP and I hope this helps the DM's understand what I am trying to achieve for my character of Akren Blake.
