Character Vault Wipe

PostAuthor: Pekarion » Sun May 18, 2008 12:20 am

Well.. you know where this is heading, What would you say to wiping the entire vault and starting anew? clean slate for everyone. I myself like the idea, I think it would be superfun. Just, seeing all those new characters, no epics, no gear, nothing. I am very well aware that I am the only one who actually thinks this would be enjoyable, but I still decided to make a poll. (also because Spool dared me)

<@spool32> I'd be afraid to even make a poll

Problems with it:
1. Guild housing. You'd keep the same guilds, maybe, but the Type I would need reforming in an IC way
2. Player Housing. Messy as hell.
3. You'd have to remove a lot of these areas from 1 and 2 that no longer exist. Nobody wants to do that work.
4. History. You'd have to kill off a ton of whatever level characters for no reason, and make it fit the history of the world... so that won't work.
5. The number of people who would leave would be pretty high, I'd think.

...I'd say it ain't happening. :)

The total NWN population is in decline. The only thing a Vault wipe would accomplish would be to kill what's left of Avlis' population. People who wish to start over can currently do so by rolling a new character or attempt to start their own server, so I really don't see the purpose.

Emphatically no.

I realize that some find this idea so insanely bad that you wished I never had uttered it, but please take it in stride. I'm not advocating this :P

I worded the poll question as "would you enjoy it" instead of "Do you think it's a good idea", and with enjoy it I mean, enjoying any aspect from playing after a vault wipe.

Also, alot of the responses are in terms of "the good of the community", and I'm pretty sure we all agree that it would be bad for the community, players getting upset and leaving etc would be inevitable. But try to think besides that, and more about whether you'd have fun playing with several other players, all back at square one.

Roll up a new character with a bunch of friends. Or do so and find some similarly levelled characters without so many attachments. It's fun! Job done!

From a pure economic point of view? I think a vault wipe is probably the only way to ever "fix" the Avlis economy (and even then it would require severing from all CoPaP worlds in the process) at least in terms of equitable results. From a purely mechanical point of view, then, there are merits to be considered. (Though unless we radically change drops, crafting, etc. then end result would still be massive inequity in the long-term so the benefits are dubious.)

The bigger problem is an in character social thing. That is social networks being formed by various characters. One of the appeals (and really only way to keep players) is that they can fit and adapt to existing networks in game. Whether these be guilds, or just adventuring parties, or people who get together at the rock and smoke mellow, or whatever.

I think if there was a way to cover for suddenly yanking out any semblence of a way for people to meet eachother, well I dunno, it might be enjoyable. Like a heavily DMed situation with weekly adventuring grouips or better, and some way to cross-polinate those? That might actually be interesting...

...but isnt' that A2?

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! *runs around screaming* Uh, I mean no thanks. I think it would just make people go away and those that don't could just take their PCs offworld to avoid the blast radius and bring them back afterward. I absolutely would do that with my main. Do I wish all those uber items that I will never be able to have were gone? Sometimes. But it gives me something to save for or at least fantasize about. Thing is wiping the vault wouldn't make them go away and I hate playing low level PCs. Heck, level 17 pisses me off regularly.

Personally I believe a wipe would improve the status of things. Granted, some people would go cry in corners because they lost their epicness along with their +5 holy robes of WTF!1!! pwning Andrinor, but for the most part I think it would be an excellent idea.

It would almost be interesting if this was actually carried out. However, it would be good to keep a back-up of the entire vault, if possible, just in case starting from scratch lost its flavor.

I would like it, but I think most won't.

As far as the effect of removing uber items, you could wipe inventories......

I have always thought that would be a neat idea. Get everyone on equal playing ground. It would be nice if some other things were taken care of first though. New recipes would be a nice fit also when it was done.

As Nob said though, that is what Avlis2 is for. ;)

Fun post anyways.

Avlis would be dull without all the current characters and history surrounding them. Sure the world history is great, and the servers have all sorts of fancy stuff, but I'd not bother playing again. It is an oooold game. I'd be fine with everyone losing all their toys and levels, as long as they were still believable as who they were before.

I play to see those old farts as much as meet new folks. I like the stories, the bitch sessions...all of that would be gone. Hit the reset button and it would be easier to just try something else that is newer when starting over.

i would definitely cry in a corner, but not for losing my epicness. rather, it would be because it took me well over a year to get my main to level 13, and with the collector quests eaten, it'll take me two years to get back.

it seems to me that a total wipe would only serve to level everyone's characters. First, it'd only be like that for a moment, and the people whose schedules allow them to be on more than others would quickly outpace others, so the parity wo0uld be shot. second, what reason is there really to level people's characters in the first place. what kind of a world would it be if there were no epics, only all noobs? certainly not any kind you could get immersed into. just wouldn't seem realistic.

my 2 shekalim.

What about an alternative set of servers, A1#2, an not linked to the other CoPaP worlds? No need to wipe anything that way.

And A2 isn't an option for a lot of folks, including me. I have a very nice laptop (Dell XPS) but it failed the NWN2 test pretty badly.

I think it'd be great to have everyone start fresh and this has crossed my mind a couple times. Of course it has pros and cons, but for one I certainly wouldn't worry about how to get RP started; that'll take care of itself like it had to when Avlis started in the first place.

All in all though, because it'd be a draw of players away from Avlis, I'd have to give it a definite thumbs down.
