Anyone interested in this?

I posted this on the Avlis Players Facebook group but got no response, so my guess is that interest is low, but check this out:

It's a single-player RPG in the style of the early 1990's that I am working on. It's probably got about 20 to 30 minutes of play time finished but not polished, where you play Myleah on her quest to ultimately found the nation of Jechran and the city of Myleah.

Is this something I should work on to finish or are people mostly like "meh"?

I saw this on my facebook feed on my phone, but kept forgetting to check it out on my computer. Thanks for the reminder here, I'm going to try it out once it finishes downloading. :)

Cool. Let me know. It's actually pretty fun to make. I use RPG Maker MV.

I like it, and all games of this sort.
I crashed with "Error : Uncaught error : header is wrong" right after i accepted the quest to get the herb from the cave to the south. Not sure if this is me or the game.

Initial gut reaction without looking or playing it is I’d play something like that until I got frustrated or fisnished it and then never touch it again.

My foundational gaming experience is built on Final Fantasy. This style of game is 100% my jam.

Orl: If I have some bug reports, would you like them in this thread or elsewhere?

I can take bug reports. When I compiled the build, there were some issues so I'm hoping it's that, but I'm sure there's also bona fide bugs in it. I find them all the time as I test and build. Tell me how to reproduce the bug, btw.

If I go to the Options and then press Esc to leave the Options again, it gives an error - ENOENT: no such file or directory, 'mkdir D:\Downloads\www\save'. It has done that twice so far

I tried creating the folder as advised and now it works without that crash

Not sure what to do after killing the wild boar though :?

Oh that's interesting.

Talk to the people with you then skin the boar.

I can't reproduce this. I get the quest for the egg/herb just fine. What else were you doing in combination with accepting the quest?

I also have that quest without crashing so far

I also got that error when trying to leave the options menu. Not too much of an issue though. I managed to accept that first quest in the village without issue, went into the cave, and was handily blown out of the water by a random encounter with three spiders. My only ally died on the first hit, but I managed to take one of the little buggers with me before game over!

I might suggest slowing down the background text a bit in the beginning if that's possible. I had some issues keeping up. Also is the speed of moving NPCs adjustable? When the boar bolted at me from off screen I nearly jumped out of my chair!

From my experience with RPG Maker 1 balancing random encounters is near impossible. Otherwise it seems promising!

I got killed again and again in the cave. Eventually I got out with just my companion dieing. I couldn't find any way for us both to survive so far

Awesome, ok, I can tone down the monsters in the cave with no problem.

That boar is a forced encounter, so I've set it to bolt up to you like that with no way to avoid it. Handy little plugin feature that I like. :)

I can slow the beginning text scroll. You can also speed it up, btw, by holding down the enter key.

The options menu thing I think is a problem caused by the fact that I compressed everything into a single executable. Normally when you build the game it creates a whole directory of messy stuff, including that directory for saving. I am going to have to head over to the rpg maker forums to see if anyone knows how to deal with that.

It hasn't been a problem since I created the folder

As for the cave, I am not sure there is any way to complete the quest with both people still alive. I ran away every time I met snakes or spiders, but the only way I could complete the quest was to fight (trying to avoid too many spoilers  )

You gotta fight your way to the end "boss" in that cave and survive with at least one person. Just seems that I made the monsters too hard. One thing you could do is walk around the area outside the cave to kill stuff and gain levels so you are strong enough to take on the cave. That's something commonly done in these old games.

What version of RPGMaker are you using? Looked like VX from what I could tell?

Anyways, I ran through what I could and having played JRPG-stye RPGs of all stripes I thiiiink I have an idea of what generally works well.

First, simplify your dungeon map a ton. Even for the more difficult dungeons of the 8-bit JRPG era that layout is generally too much for a first dungeon. Second, yeah the difficulty in said dungeon is too high. If you're emulating the 16-bit era feel they shouldn't be knocking off even half your HP per hit, I would tone it down even further still or move the cave further away since the distance from where the game begins usually equals greater difficulty both mentally and literally and would work better to promote some level grinding. I typically like it if the monsters are a moderate challenge that could steadily cause resource drain while the real challenge lies in the boss encounters. I don't recommend having both randoms and boss-type fights be highly difficult.

Second, and this part is subjective, but I think you should begin your game in the town first and give the player a bit more of a chance to know the companions for however short you are with them or even make them playable party members. I never worked with VX but you should still be able to auto-pilot them to the plains area and just have an NPC blocking the town exit until she gets to know everyone. The current narrative pacing I feel goes too fast and doesn't give me a chance to get to know the companions at all even if they aren't meant to be around for long. That is just something that I think would help get the player more invested.

Part of what I wrestle with here, however, is how much dialogue is too much. People mostly don't read that stuff anyway, so I've been trying to minimize it and make it important, rather than writing a novel.

I know I even personally hate it when a game opens up with a 10-minute long cutscene that I am forced to sit through before I can even play, so I've been trying to make that stuff relatively short.
