Help on Religions

PostAuthor: Raagrik » Wed Jul 24, 2002 8:02 pm

does anyone have any direction to send me to read up on the gods and religions of the world. i want to create a character, but I don't want to do so without researching a bit first and I simply can't find anything that helps. perhaps i'm just not looking hard enough, i don't know, but i'd appreciate any help.
thanks.

Read the Avlis Basic Descriptions thread and the Preliminary Guide to Mikona thread and you'll have a foundation.

For anymore detail on a particular god that you like, you can come to me and I'll give more info on it.

Right, I read those, I was just wondering if some sort of list existed somewhere that gave names and basic guidelines/restrictions for at least the nine major gods mentioned in the documents you sent me to read.

There's a present for you in the Basic Descriptions thread. Let me know which ones you want expanded.

Actually, Vrok is still waiting for Kord to show up...very hard to worship an elf!

Tyr would certainly have to agree with Vrok...

As for MacLeod, how 'bout the healing gods? None on the list :(

The nine major gods are all human, so if you take one of them you will not be worshiping an elf.

There are other gods not on that list. That was just the most handy and complete list that I already had sitting on my hard drive. I will expand on it a bit for you all.

You wrote in the Basic Description section that each of the gods created one of the demi-human races... eg Gorethar created the dwarves, Dru'el is the god of the elves, etc.

You also mentioned that the 9 gods are all human. Does that mean that the demi-humans worship human gods rather than ones of their own race?

Thanks

Kinda sorta, but not really.

The demi-human races all know who created them and are grateful for the fact. So they do worship the nine gods. But human is a loose term for them... they're deity, beyond race at this point. The demi-human races know that too.

And to top it off, many of the nine gods had help and instruction in creating their races. Example, Corellon Larethian helped Dru'El create the elves. Thus, Dru'El gave Corellon Larethian access to Avlis. So many elves worhip him as well. All of the gods who fall into this category are listed in that god key I already posted.

The human gods are there for a reason. There is a wide theme on Avlis. The theme is that RACE doesn't matter. There are average behaviors and beliefs for all the races, and you can't deny it BUT in the end, you can't rely on those averages. You have to go by their beliefs and actions.

The demi-humans realize that they were created by things that were once human, but all throughout their history that has not mattered because they don't see their gods as "humans", but gods. The actions of the gods are beneficial to their race, so they follow them.
