What keeps other players from taking all your stuff when you die?

At the moment, nothing. We will see how it goes.

If everyone is roleplaying, then they will generally go by alignment and character class.... i.e. a Paladin would probably not rob a corpse, so I would expect whoever was playing a Paladin to not loot corpses, and if they did, I would expect them to return whatever they looted if the original owner came back for it.

On the other hand, a chaotic evil rogue might be a problem. If they looted you, you may not get back your stuff, but then again, you may be able to do something about it. (I was thinking of instituting a theft reporting script where you can report thefts to the guards. That will store the names somewhere and then the next time a DM logs on he may decide to possess a guard and go after the player for "questioning". Just an idea.)

But keep in mind this is roleplaying. What would you do in real life if someone took your stuff? Would you be the kind of character who would steal stuff from corpses?

What is NOT allowed is griefing. A LG Paladin who loots the corpse of another Paladin and then refuses to give back his stuff for no reason is not roleplaying. He's griefing, and if too much of that goes on, I will change the corpse looting rights to be the owner only.

I'm more inclined to change the players alignment towards chaotic and away from good... rather than an Out-of-Character solution.

Believe me, we can put in code to track who loots bodies and where those looted items go. Compare that to alignment, we can sufficiently deduce motive and adjust alignment and guard reaction towards that character.

In other words, Lawful person loots consistantly... he becomes chaotic and slides away from good. Then if the guards see him loot on their patrol (or their reported) they will go after them.

I was also thinking about guards a bit before. Orleron, when you implement the below 0hp dying scripts... I was thinking about implenting guard behavior such that if the guard was fighting this crimininal, upon reaching below 0 (or if the person says "i give up" or "i surrender") they are halled to a jail cell and stripped of items.

Or better yet, when a guard is after someone, First put up a conversation dialog that allows them to give in quietly.... this will initiate the escort to the prison (i'd rather not do a teleport).

I killed a raven in town yesterday and got guard whacked. :) I was starving and needed food. I was only attempting to harvest what I needed to survive!

You got guard whacked for killing a raven?

Oh crap... maybe the animals are commoner faction.

Woops!! Thanks Dupree.

Silk, go ahead and code all that. It sounds purty funky. :D
