Real Life Caught Up To Me...

PostAuthor: Nob » Tue Sep 26, 2017 2:28 am

Hey gang.

I'll probably be a bit absent for the next week or two for the following reason.

Physically I'm fine, just need to sort out a few things that'll make me scarce. Sorry everyone. (especially my Wednesday DM party)

We'll be back to our scheduled Nob Program by the start of next week.
I laughed about it originally - but now I'm still processing about what I did wrong.

I was trying to get a (really) drunk woman to accept at least being walked home, or failing that, a taxi ride (even if it was only 4 blocks), but then heard fighting and yelling...
I recognized one of the people (a homeless guy with dreadlocks and a dog down on 6th) and as they came over to our side of the street, I asked if he was alright. He said, rather wide-eyed, that he needed help and that he'd just 'stabbed a guy". Said guy (who I guess wasn't happy about being told he'd been stabbed when he hadn't) came over to pick a bigger fight, making noise about how "this is my city" and trying to restart the fight.

At this point I got between them and tried to talk them down. This wasn't really working, and then I guess his posse (including his girlfriend) came over - and at first tried to get him to calm down and leave...but he persisted and the scruffle started again (where, again, I moved between them and tried to stop the shoving and hitting), while the dude's girlfriend went to reach for, and tried to take, the homeless guy's dog by the leash. This prompted a melee, since he swung at her in response and the entire friend group descended on the homeless guy, starting to shove him on to the ground and kick him.

Again, tried to get them to stop, but there were just too many people to effectively restrain all of them. This was a point where I'd already failed - I screwed up in deescalating, should've found a way to get them to stop way before hand.

At any rate in the scuffle, I dropped my phone and my backpack. The door guys at the bars around us (Casino el Camino, Dirty Dog) came over and moved to at least get me out from the scrum, and a bartender had called the cops, who had responded eventually.

Friends at Casino basically got me to come back in, and let things blow over a bit as the cops sorted things out....but when I went back out my backpack and phone were gone.

And thinking back on it...the image I remember most was the poor woman I had been trying to help before hand - she'd looked absolutely terrified as things started escalating - in hindsight I'm still kicking myself for not doing enough to get her inside at least before hand...I don't know what happened to her, either, as the door guys told her to leave and get away before the cops dragged her into it - but this was a fuck up on my part. I made her night worse - and I don't know how to make that right for her.

I'm grateful for Dave and Desiree at Casino who helped calm me and then got me a cab (and the money to get home, as I'd found my Paypal Card got lost in the scruffle), and I owe them a lot. I should also, in hindsight, be glad I didn't really have any attempts hits connect with me - I get that this was the whole point of taking judo and karate lessons back in the day and that the reflexes are still there, still, it was stupid to stay involved after blows were exchanged.

Not sure what to think about the missing bag and contents and phone....or for that matter my missing card. I'm just more exhausted about it than anything else.

Finally - FUCK the assholes who decided it'd be a great funny thing to grab their phones and record the thing and then when I told them to stop countered "But it's funny, dude". There's a special fucking place in hell for that shit.

Just wow.

Glad it didn’t get worse.
