Gravatar is actually a good thing IMO, since it lets you keep all your avatars in one place, and use them in several different ways as far as resizing and so on (sorta like ones on your phones etc).

For some reason your forum doesn't like sending confirmation emails to my GMail account though. Tried it a few times and got nothing, and not in the spam folder either. X:|

Firstly, HI! :)

Second:
A re-implementation of Avlis in a Unity based system!?
And I just had the urge to come and check out Avlis today... it's funny how life leads you to places you need to be.

Here's what I mean:
1) I've very recently had the urge to create something again.

2) I'm currently at a gaming company that is moving to Unity. (I have access to pro licenses) I'd like to learn more so I can be better involved in the project (I'm Exec Producer / Senior PM so having some extra technical knowledge would help me out alot)

3) I have access to artists, programmers, QA, Math Specialists, and gaming partners that are working on Unity games that are insane (like Warhammer 40k)... so I can certainly find things out that may need help or recruit people etc :)

4) It's freakin Avlis without a Buggy NWN 2 engine! Sounds like lots'o'fun.

5) When my Unity Based Games come out, I will be holding focus groups and who better than this fantastic Avlissian bunch, If I'm going to pay money to someone to focus group at least give it back to a great community.

My time may be more limited than before but this is exciting. I had heard about Shards but didnt' back.. if I had known I would have put money in to help the Avlis migration :)

Wow Vian, that sounds great. Funny how things work out. I haven't delved much into Shards (just backed it) but sounds like interest and resources are piling up for an Avlis version.

Holy crap it's Vian Valorean! How you doing man???

Things come around. I'll say. It's great to see you on here. I think you were one of the first five Avlis Team members ever, and certainly one of the first DM's, if not THE first. I don't think anyone can remember. Certainly not this old man. :opa:

I wouldn't call it a total migration just yet, but Silk and I are trying to get this rolling. If you want to head over to our forums on worldofavlis.com, feel free.

Orl! :) I'm doing well these days sir, hope the same for you and the family twin boys if my old man memory serves me right. Hope Silk is doing well! I joined the DM team same time as Tinder, Strangg, and Tri'as the 4 of us were the first DM's. Those guys beat me by a few hours if my memory serves me right lol. But truth be told you were the first DM and a sadistic one.. trying to kill the old group at every turn when we were fighting the baalor in the underdark lol! :)

I read about the avlis extension: so it's a creation of another part of the world, but that's awesome! Although with overlap in Galdos and Deglos. Shards looks like it will be a great platform to do it on.. it has so many things I wish NWN had (a Z-axis, ability to build homes.. on your own, proper mounts, etc) Would be fun to do it again!

Anyone want a Tolgaroth or a Sorvanok part II :twisted:
I could actually finish the in game quest for Sorvanok I still have all the files and writing... I could finally implement it properly... I'd have to recreate all the areas (caves of shadow, lightforgers grove, Sorvanok's throne room etc) but with help it could be fun :)

Anyways I'll head over there and start talking about it :) If you or Silk have questions about Unity that you need answered send me a note I can go find out from my programmers.

Hey I wasn't sadistic. :P I wasn't trying to kill everyone.... just YOU. mmmmuahahaha..... :mrgreen: Anyways, I never could. You were too powerful.

Plethora is the head of the NWN side of things so feel free to talk with her about anything you want to slip into the game, areawise/questwise.

I'm actually up to 4 kids now. The twins were followed 4 years later by singlets, twice in a row. That pretty much put me out of the running for the game for a lot of years. However, now, all my kids are between 4 and 10, so there's no more diapers and no teenagers, which means I have a couple years or so to mess around again.

Right now in Unity the thing that makes me cry the most is water. I fucking hate water. ARGH.... :finger: water. So, yeah. Anything they know about water is great, namely, getting streams to flow in the proper direction and getting the streams' water tiles to match up to water tiles from the lakes they flow into. Most of the online tutorials are useless for that.

Also right now I'm having this problem:

Image

The river looks like it's in front of the trees, but really is behind them about a quarter of a mile. Wtf??

Awesome about the family and congrats! I'm only at 1 and he's 3 but another one on the way soon... I think (still very early not sure yet like a couple weeks in so we'll find out next month).

Unity Water.. LOL looks like a problem ;) I'll see what I can find out for you. That may require some specific resources to find out as water is a lot better in Unity Pro (more assets available and specific code / shaders available) They may not even have the answer because they all use Unity Pro.

As for the placement issue.. check your shader rendering order. You may have your shader for water rendering on top of the trees. It could be a transparency issue where you have multiple transparencies rendering on top of each other.. does it always look like this or only from this camera / angle?

It always looks like that. How do you change the render ordering for shaders?

Congrats on the new baby on its way!

Re: Shards Online doing another Kickstarter

PostAuthor: Vian » Tue Dec 16, 2014 4:12 am

thanks won't know for sure for a bit but hopeful.:)

Here's one that can help you with the flowing water: (basically need a new shader but there is code that helps with depth on unity wiki - link is in the article)
http://www.7generationgames.com/2013/07 ... a-3d-game/

Shader Rendering Order -
http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/SL-SubshaderTags.html

In particular you want this:
"Geometry render queue optimizes the drawing order of the objects for best performance. All other render queues sort objects by distance, starting rendering from the furthest ones and ending with the closest ones.

For special uses in-between queues can be used. Internally each queue is represented by integer index; Background is 1000, Geometry is 2000, AlphaTest is 2450, Transparent is 3000 and Overlay is 4000. If a shader uses a queue like this:

Tags { "Queue" = "Geometry+1" }
This will make the object be rendered after all opaque objects, but before transparent objects, as render queue index will be 2001 (geometry plus one). This is useful in situations where you want some objects be always drawn between other sets of objects. For example, in most cases transparent water should be drawn after opaque objects but before transparent objects."

i.e. you do something like this: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/23 ... rd-tr.html
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/3-2-wa ... ees.77544/

"You can fix the issue by changing the queue order for the water. Edit FX-Water3.shader and replace all instances of:
"Queue"="Transparent"
to
"Queue"="Transparent-200"

The billboard trees use Transparent-100, and the water just needs to come first

Note that you'll probably need to restart the editor for the change to take effect, that seems like a bug as well...."

Yeah I set the water to the Geometry render order, but the advice in your links is better, i.e. set it to Transparency - 200.

The other issue that always crops up is the intersection between a stream and a lake. The tile from the stream does not match up with the tile from the lake, so I have to somehow hide that. It has to be possible to blend those tiles together though. I mean, lakes have multiple tiles and you can't see the edges between them. I dunno.

Going back to Gravatar... Once you have signed up to use Gravatar (https://en.gravatar.com), you can add multiple images. One per email address though. So if you want to change your image for a specific website, you need to make sure you only use that email on a single WordPress site.
