This looks very interesting... however, the admin over at Realms of Annakolia insists that overrides cause lag. He says:

Overrides conflict with NWN and the CEP. They create lag that can last for awhile even after a player with them has logged off.

Also
As far as i can tell and from ALL previous years of experience running a NWN server, this is caused by overrides messing with the server's stacks.

I do not know if this is true... I am just getting my PW together now, and haven't done any testing. But they claim to be pretty certain over at RoA (having done tests, etc). They say it slows down ping time. The claim is that overides are just there for testing and that they are not intended to be used for playing the game. In fact having overrides will get you banned on RoA.

Ya gotta be kidding, how in the heck does an Override get you banned?

/me snickers I found their assertions fairly naive.

There is one thing where the overrides can cause a problem and that's character creation since that's all done client side (gee thanks Bioware). This is rather easy to detect and anything non-cosmetic will fail the ELC checker making the character unplayable.

So Mr Smeec, how about posting up those edited health bar files? Im not so edit inclined but i do not like the blue as you. I find it distracting but I do like the idea of seeing what your 'status' is at a glance. The blue for icons doesnt really bother me for highlighting mostly because i doubt i can edit each of those colors well with the shading they have.

You can get back to the old red one by deleting gui_boxes_ingame.tga. If you don't like the background for it, delete (or edit) pnl_party_bar.tga.

If you want to change the color, open up gui_boxes_ingame.tga, and change the blue bit circled below to any other color.

By request from Sephira, changed icons for invis, imp invis and shadowshield, since the grey was hard to see. Uses the teal(?) from the magic missile icon. (is_imprinvis.tga, is_invisib.tga and is_shadshld.tga). If there are any others like this, I can fix them too. *disclaimer: Not a caster, so I rarely see these IG.

the 'Stealth' icon is like this too. Main reason I have a problem with them is that the faded out look is used when you can't use the ability, so it can cause some confusion

Any chance you could do some for the custom Avlis spells? *crosses fingers*

Y'know.....That would be pretty awesome, but for some reason, I kinda like the custom spells being the only 'normal' colored ones. Its like a little reminder that Avlis > Aenea

Nice tip, thank you. I changed mine to a dark grey. Now, visually, color from being wounded really stands out.

When re-coloring the icons I assume there is no easy way to change the "general" color... thus one needs to pretty much change every pixel to various shades of the desired color if it is to look good?

Do you get a white outline of the icon when you select it? I do, makes it very easy to see if it is chosen or not.

Re: New GUI available -->transparent menus, colorful icons

It has been a while since this got a bump. I was waiting for this (and some others) to be added when we got the nifty Avlis installer thing, but all the extras were left out of it in the end.

Here's the first version of the Avlis NWN load screen Belasco asked me how to make long ago (using Camb's great map stuff). I only showed her how to chop it up to make NWN happy, and she did all the real work. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11117719/Avlis/Misc/Avlis_Splash.rar

Toss load_legal.tga and load_legal2.tga in your override folder, then start NWN. You should see something like this:

Go poke her about any newer ones :cooler:

This hasn't been bumped in a while, and there are newer versions of gui replacements on the vault, but someone asked about something specific in IRC today. I was bored, and this was a bit more of a challenge to figure out than I expected, but...

If you are interested in changing the transparency of the IG chat windows (or even color/image behind it), this might be of interest to you. It goes in your override folder (or wherever else you toss custom stuff), and there are 3 model files in the archive. 1 for each of the left, right and main (combined) chat backgrounds, so you can even change them independently.

Chat Background Override Files

Screenshot of it in action in the Auction Hall - With that annoying light floor!!!

I haven't tested it much yet, so if there are any problems, just delete the files from override (and tell me, so I can make it better).

The technical details, and how to adjust them yourselves:

The .mdl files are just decompiled ascii text (so plain old text files), that you can edit in whatever you want. I added comments so you could find where to tweak things, and the section below is in each file:
Code: Select all
  # This is the background image file.
  bitmap black
  # This sets transparency of the image.
  # 0 = total transparency.
  # 1 = opaque (solid).
  # Values between for partial results.
  alpha 0.85

I had to use the "black" texture (a .tga, or .dds that the game uses), instead of the default "gui_ig_main" one, since that has its own alpha channel, so changes in the model alpha do very little to it. You can experiment with any other texture the game uses, or even add a new one to override, but it only uses a few pixels to stretch out, so a plain color/gradient might be best. Most people will only want to change the "alpha" number there. As the comments say, 0 makes it totally transparent, 1 is solid black (or whatever texture you use), and numbers in-between make it more or less translucent. It might be backwards from what some would think though, since 0.75 would be 75% solid, while 0.25 is 25% solid (near transparent).

So if you think I made them too dark, just lower the "alpha 0.85" value to something like "alpha 0.7", or whatever you prefer. Tweak away, save it, then load up any mod to test it. Remember you can "split" and "combine" the chat windows by right clicking the top bar of one IG, to test all 3.

I hope this is useful to someone besides me!

*edits*
I thought about including the chat input line and quickbar files, but they use textures that are already being overriden with other gui modifications. Way too many potential problems if I start messing with other overrides here like that. In fact, if you already have these files in override from some other gui enhancement thing, don't overwrite them unless you want these instead.

Also, I updated the files in the download with the ones from HotU, since I used earlier ones the first time, so if you grabbed it before seeing this, just re-download it, and use the new files instead. The old ones don't break anything, but newer is better, right? My way of avoiding more technical jargon.
 :P

This was exactly what I was looking for, I was having issues viewing the chat dialog box as it didn't have enough contrast when viewing over certain backgrounds. Thanks for putting this together, much appreciated.

Cheers,
