I also wanted to address the point about leveling on other servers.

If we only link to servers with our basic philosophy, then it shouldn't be a problem to level there. Going to Server X at level 2 and returning to Avlis at level 4 will take you just as long as getting to level 4 on Avlis. If it is otherwise, then we will seriously consider our link with that place.

So in essence, I don't care where you level. Ultimately I'd like to make the world a challenge for both high and low level chars. But we won't worry about that until someone actually gets a high level char.

I think Silk could definitely write some small program to do a bit of weeding out automatically. Neverwinter Script is basically C, with a list of its own functions and objects. That's not a problem for Silk. I on the other hand will have to bone up on my programming, but that won't take me more than a few days, at least to do the basic things I want to do.

Now granted this weeding program won't be able to cover all instances, because the truth is whenever you idiot proof something, God builds a bigger idiot. But it will certainly serve to keep it to a minimum while we are not watching the world personally.

My suggestion:
Ya needa start building up a design spec on the Avilis Forum, let us know what to look forward to :)

Or even better, a read-only forum, or just a bunch of read-only topped posts on Avilis

Yeah, you're right. You can't gleen much info from the Avlis board unless you look at the very first posts near the back, and even then it's not tailored for non-builders. We'll do something like that. Good idea.

I agree about the closed server. Like has been mentioned on the nwn forums many times, an open PW will just be chaos. No good. I assume characters that are part of the Avlis Project will be created on your PW (or a linked on in the future).

Also, I've got to ask it. Will I be able to play a thief? If so, will it be like a "UO thief" or more in the sense that I can sneak around and pick locks and such?

As for a theif stratics has a good peice on them from what i get yes you will be able to steal, lock pick and stealth they will be able to detect high end traps basically if you have a D&D 3rd addition book u can get the info there. hope that helps

And i hope to be a part of Avlis i need to go back and read a bit more about the world is there anywhere i can get alot of info on it or should i just keep read this forum?

Thiefs are a big issue, or assume they will be on the server.... mainly because there's a fine line between thieving and griefing.

Yes, you can play a thief as per 3rd Ed rules. In those rules there are ways to do all sorts of things, i.e. stealing, picking locks, etc.

But I would have to say "no" you can't play a UO thief in the sense that the thieves in UO have no purpose except to grief play. Mainly they just run around stealing everything in sight just to piss people off. A properly played thief is a *character*, not a griefer. They have a *story* and a *reason* why they do the things they do. Logging on to the game to simply steal stuff from people and then tease them with it, or kill them for no reason is not exactly in the spirit of dungeons and dragons. On the other hand, being a pickpocket because you have no money and it's your only way to make a living is another story. But if you ever manage to get rich by being a pickpocket, your character is very likely to give up the profession and do something else, because face it, pickpockets who get rich tend to want something more. This is in contrast to UO where pickpocketing is the most lucrative thing you can do, and people spend years doing nothing but, and with no story attached.

The bottom line for playing a thief is the same as pkilling: Character vs. character is fine, but once it becomes that person behind the screen against the other person behind the screen it's no longer cool.

UO is a contest to see which PERSON can build the coolest account. NWN is a world where CHARACTERS survive and be the best they can be.

I will be adding more info about the world in the future, when I have a little more time.

Granted, I haven't looked at the tools and the language details, I still don't see the general issue. If reasonable analysis is done on the system and what makes the game balanced, we can then form general rules touching on specific systems. If the tools are flexible enough, we can have a script that looks for excessive power or abuse and deal with it in an appropriate way.

Of course, this is all blind conjecture until I actually look at the tools.

Silk, no offense, but I don't think you have any reasonable chance of accomplishing this feat. Not to mention if you could manage a reasonably accurate and capable analyst program in NwN-Script, how long would it take to code? NwN has a LOT of possible character attributes that would all need to be weighed, measured and considered.

64 characters per server.

I don't care about finding out about the game before we start.

Just give me what I can create, the IP and let me login and figure it out on my own.

Hasta.

No one knows yet. I imagine you can create as many characters as you like, but remember the more you make, the less time you will have to develop each one. NWN is about character development, not muling. It's a different mindset. But aside from that, I don't personally care how many characters you have so long as it does not allow you do abuse the game.

I plan on playing one and only one unless something unforseen comes about. Now, some friends and I are planning on doing our own thing on a smaller scale so I'll have a char there plus maybe a character here and there on other servers. But I've been watching NWN for quite some time now and I remember when I first read about the Avlis Project for NWN quite some time ago and I was pretty pumped about it. Now, that I know the people better, I'm even that much more excited. :D

what about restricting the server to current blackdagger posters , at least at the biggining?
many of the posters here have posted for some time, and know eachother ,
so the possbility of kewl dewds are griefers is slim

thats a good idea only for a little bit tho and we could even make it like an "invite only" thing were current avlis players would be the only ones to get someone else in i don't know just a suggestion and if anyone wants to start some type of guild let me know

I would be up for trying that , Dewinter, but off hand I don't know how to do that. Perhaps Silk will.
