Seeing things

PostAuthor: Pat Briams » Mon Dec 21, 2009 2:24 pm

I often get illusions/mirror images of my allies in game. It usually happens when they cast invisibility spells. On my screen their characters will be frozen in place, sometimes translucent and sometimes opaque. I often don't realize they are not actually standing there, until I notice the moving purple dots on the mini-map.

It's not a big issue, but quite annoying. Do I have a corrupt hak or something? Anyone else got the same problem?

I have the same problem. Doesnt bother me I just keep walking. See invisibility or True Sight will get rid of the ghost images so to speak other wise just have to live with seeing ghosts.

I get that too. Standing around with someone's ghost. Tell a party member to cast a see invisibility on you!

I don't know of any fix for it.

Common issue. Solution: Use See Invisibility/True Sight!

At least you can fix the cases of "blindness" after you have been in magical Darkness, by the Crafting Menu -> Special Functions -> Fix Ultravision Bug.

Also you can check your map. The character movement of a party member will show on the map so you can know where everyone actually happens to be. I have had whole conversations before realising that I was actually all alone. :-(

Yeah what it is a game mechanic, involving one of the uses of the Listen. Your game is telling you 'hey you heard an invisible creature here, and this is what it looks like'. I, too, am exceptionally aggravated by it. You'll need something that lets you See Invisibility to get around it.

A good, quick way to tell if the other character is real or a ghost is to arrow over them. If their floaty name appears then they are real, but if no name appears thenit is a ghost.

I've had rather detailed, though one sided, conversations with ghost images due to this bug. One of the reasons my cleric more or less always has TS up. Hebrin hears well enough that he can "see" invisible people unless they are moving silently as well, and have a very very high MS score.

Disclaimer: No, he can't see invis, hence the quotations. It's basically that he hears someone who is invisible, but he cannot ID them, by virtue of not being able to see them. Even still, helps tons in taking out the invised mages.

I use the same effect as GunnJ except I'm more of a keyboard user so I press TAB to check if there is a floaty name. *grumbles about a certain Archmage who is always wandering off invisible, leaving a ghost behind*

Unfortunatly, it seems that it is just something to get used to. It happens a lot, and not just on Avlis, so I don't think it has anything to do with the Avlis Haks.

If you think it's annoying that you have to cast See Invisibility or True Seeing... try being a Dwarven Fighter who doesn't have the best Listen skill and can't cast spells that will allow him to see everyone. One Mass Invisibility Spell and Brongar ends up three areas behind the entire party because he is still waiting for everyone to move out.

In fact... one other thing that may or may not be a bug... if someone is Invisible or Hiding, but they Talk... 80% of the time I don't hear them, even though they are standing right next to my character. What they say never appears on the left side conversation bar. I know I wouldn't see the floating text since they are invisible, but what they say SHOULD still show up on the conversation panel. Probably because I failed a Listen check of some kind, but I don't see why Talking would be affected by that.

If someone is invisible then you can only hear him from a very short distance.
Similarly, if you're blind you can only hear others if they're within this distance.

It's an annoying Bioware quick we just have to live with.

Well, you hit them. If you get a 50% miss chance, they are concealed or invis. Seems an easy enough solution :P

I do that with death magic... turns out after a few years I learned Finger of Death isn't affected by the 50% miss/concealment.

Imagine being a Necromancy specialist and being one of the few mages around who can't cast True Seeing or See Invisibility, and has a terrible listen on account of being a mage (mages are bad listeners). All of your wizard and sorcerer friends make fun of you :(
