Getting new data: Would you pre-order a sourcebook?

PostAuthor: Orleron » Sat Sep 01, 2007 3:15 pm

Ok, I am developing the potential to get the book published under the condition that I spring for the ~$4,000 art budget myself, which I am very willing (and able) to do. That takes a lot of the stress out of the publisher, because then they have fewer costs to recoup!

One publisher is thinking about it. So here's the thing... pre-orders are what publishers use to fund the printing of the book. They are important. So I'd like to know if you would pre-order an Avlis sourcebook, i.e. pre-pay, for a sourcebook in advance, to get it published.

Let's set the cost at US$50 for a 300-page hard cover black and white 8.5" x 11" book.

Would you do it if it enabled us to get this thing out? I'm going to use this poll to count the number of possible pre-orders, so please try to be accurate!

Yes one copy.

And it would need shipment to the Netherlands.

Assume that international shipping is no issue.

I put that option in just for you. :) I remember you stating it on past polls.

Actually you could send a bunch at once to the Netherlands (and then re-send them when they get here), that might be cheaper.

I've been looking forward to the book since I heard about it. Want to start a PnP game in Avlis.

Voted Yes, 1 copy.

I voted I'd buy one eventually. Right now my personal life is a bit chaotic and hectic, I'd wait for it to settle down, also because I don't know if I will have money for it after my move. I'll have to buy so many things already.

Eventually I'd have the money, though, so I picked the middle option.

You've got my $50 pledge, Orl.

For those of you 'no money' people... consider this:

Take $5-10 a month and put it in a shoebox. By the time they're ready to take your pre-order you'll have the $50.

Skip a latte once or twice a month. Poof! You bought the book.

Went ahead and said I would pre-order one. Out of the two years and some-odd months I have been playing, I haven't given anything. Least I could do is get a sourcebook. I'd have to mail a check or something though, I don't have PayPal or anything like that.

Oh, signed one. hehe, put some blank pages in there too so I can work on getting Avlisian signatures in it. yarr!

Ha! Great idea. Every get-together, everyone pulls out their sourcebooks for signature-swapping. It'll be like the Avlissian yearbook...

Uh oh... but the popular kids will have their books filled with graffiti.... while the lame travel-impaired ones like me will have one or two sigs from local Avlis friends! :(

Avoiding that stigma just might be enough to actually get me to a meet one of these days!

That might be a problem for those not in the US. We would have to order it, wait for it to be delivered (for example to the UK), then post it back to the US and then you sign it and send it back. Some of us are not as young as we used to be you know :opa:

Is there any chance you could sign a batch of them and then let the distributors send those out to those who want a signed copy please? Maybe the first X of the pre-orders are signed ones - that would encourage us to pre-order quickly.

That was the deal offered originally by Rich Burlew for the first OOTS book - although unfortunately, he got screwed by his distributor and the signed ones went astray somewhere. Don't let that put you off of course.
