Avlis policy on: Spies

independent of your race, class, alignment, age, deity, length of beard, sexual preference, oppressive BO and other such stuff: the same rules apply to every character.

1) The DM sponsor of the guild you're trying to spy and spying for knows about it.

2) All information spied MUST pass through this DM.

This includes Changelings.

What exactly do you mean when you say that the information must "pass through you?" Do you just mean we must tell you everything we learn or that you must approve info that we can "spy?"

Any information that is to be passed on to another group by a spy must first be checked with the DM.

I'd like to ask a question about this:

Scenario a)

Jack the HiPSer ICly follows Riley Blindeye to a "secret" meeting. Secret things are ICly discussed within Jack's hearing. Jack takes copious notes to bring back to the Guild of HiPS, of which he's a member. He also tells his friends what he heard.

Scenario b)
Judas, Mage of the White Order, is really a plant for the Gold Order, and wants to funnel information from the White's forum to the Golds.

Now, which of these two cases is "spying"?

If you're in a group/guild, you know who the DM is.

Scenario B is what is meant by spying in this case. Being a member of two different groups, and passing sensitive information between the two. There is not a list of the sponsors for each guild, but it doesn't matter unless you are a member of the guild, in which case you will be well aware of who your sponsor is.

If said meeting takes place in a public that Jack the HiPSer can escape detection in and is not violating player or guild housing in any way, then it's fair game and legit.

Judas, Mage of the White Order, is really a plant for the Gold Order, and wants to funnel information from the White's forum to the Golds.

This constitutes interguild spying with the intent to leak private information from their forums, and as such requires the approval of the DM sponsors involved with the guilds.

This only covers official aka sponsored DMs. But if unofficial group A wants to spy on Official Guild B they will have to go through Official Guild B's sponsor with any information they steal. If they have someone in Official Guild B to spy, he or she will know who the sponsor is.

How about this:

Character A gives false information to a group of the HiPS guild; i.e. false name, age, etc., and proceeds to gather information on them via working with them. No information is 'stolen' per se, but more gathered via IC personal networking.

Said information is then passed on to groups which may have use for the information.

*shrugs* I guess in short: is dealing in information as above subject to the spying policy?

Just contact the DM sponsor of any group you want to spy on in any way and you will get all your answers.
