Low Magic?

PostAuthor: Sindol » Wed Apr 09, 2003 11:38 am

Ok, I hope this is the right place for this post...

How low magic is Avlis?

I have noticed that almost no merchants sell anything magical above +1 enchantments. Recently however I heard of a guy who bought a highly enchanted magic item from the 1%-er store (where I still have never found anyone home, but that's a whole other issue), absolutely no adventuring or DM-questing involved, as far as I know. (I will not name the name or the item here, I do not want to be a snitch)

Maybe I do require some clearing up of their role: are they player characters with a limited amount of extremely powerful magic items that they sell to the lucky ones who find them at their store, or are they DM's who sell only to those they deem worthy?

It's not that I would advocate more magic, I don't but the issue still irks me. Why are such magic items still simply for sale in a store (a special one maybe, but still a store) when Avlis is supposed to be low magic?

Hope you don't mistake this for a rant,

the 1%ers are players, so that is not really a store. they are selling off extra items that they own

That's no longer *entirely* accurate. Several of them are DMs/Builders/Scripters now, but these are their characters from "back in the day", selling off extra items that they acquired back when Avlis was NOT low-magick.

Those items are more useful then powerful though.

A high-magic super powerful item would be somthing like a Spear that does triple damage plus 1dX fire damage

It's low and getting lower by the day. Want a powerful item? Get involved in DM plotlines and role play a lot. Of course, if I took my own advice, I might have a +2 item by now.

The 1% shop was origionally started by 5 players who had a LOT of magic items. The idea was the shop would be a fun rp element and a nice source of income. 4 of the 5 soon after became team members, and are too busy to ever play any more. Also 4 of the 5 have gotten rid of they hoards of magic items either through trade in, or through concern for a low magic avlis. The shop was a fun idea, but things took a different course.

As for low magic, the recent trade ins plus the plain old trashing of several mules by various players has led to the removal (by my count) of upwards of 3000 magic items from avlis. The majority of these items were +3 or greater.

With player stockpiles removed, the dm's now have greater control of magic on the server. Items will now begin to be given out for questing, good rp, and participation in plot lines.

dzilla... You will never find a spear that does triple damage. Avlis is not that kind of server. Rewards of +1 and +2 equivalent items will be common and should be given out often for questing and good group play. Less common rewards will range up to +4 equivalent, and will be rp and plot line based. Shiny weapons will most likely go out at the rate of 1/month, but may increase as the player base grows.

Kaelyn, I am going to use you as my example. After the magic items were removed, Kaelyn was the first to get a rp reward item, which he earned through consistant roleplay and overcoming adversity. When confronted by a powerful and very evil NPC he was given a choice: Join me or die. Sticking by his paladinship he went with #2, and as a result he was killed and looted dry. That act put up a flag for the dm's... Here is a player who deserves something. However, it did not gain him an instant reward. Instead a kaelyn post was made on the dm boards and we watched him for a month or two before we decided he REALLY earned it. He ended up with a very nice item, with a function and description personalized to his character. (hint: rewards for stellar and consistant RP are usually shiny).

And of course, there will always be anomolies.

That's all for now boys and girls. I hope this clears up some of the how's and why's of magic.

In a recent PM to Orleron about my Guild leadership token and why it no longer had electric damage on an otherwise basicly mundane sword he said and I am paraphrasing here:

We are trying to get rid of shiny things in Avlis

My response was

Awwww, but I like shiny things

So as time goes on I expect that the shiny items will do what they truly should do and that is inspire owe in those that see them weilded and also send a clear message that this person has done something truly special to earn that item.

Can't say that I dont like this idea. all these fighters with Tollgaroth's swords is a bit much really

I like the idea very much. And all those people running around with those two-handed flaming swords is plain silly.

Yeah, get rid off all those shiny thingies!

All power to the mages!

Now if we could script the spells ina way that they too would conform to the concept of a low-magic-world....

But currently balance is getting weighted heavely in favour of casters...

I once told an M'Chekian soldier to fish for food to feed his starving people, rather than wage war and try to take what was not rightfully his. He, of course, told me I was crazy.

What about perhaps weapons being "upgraded" as you do something noteworthy. Thus you get to keep your treasured sword you've had since the year dot but it gets enhanced with new magic abilities.

So using Tenirra as an example her token of office sword could perhaps get its electric damage added as a reward from her goddess if she does something truely exempelary(spelling)

I like the idea of having a fabled sword that has grown with me (albeit in actual terms you'd have to take away the sword and give them a new one, but in character it would be) rather than the, I've been using this for years but this new sword gives me and extra d6 whatever damage so bye bye trusted sword.

Also can special made DM given weapons have unique names? This would be interesting as if the sword dissapeared from its owner then, as its one of a kind, could perhaps be tracked down.

Just a thought, I could just be gibbering of course.

I have seen Kaelyn's axe (from Twiggy's example), and I think it had a unique name, so that is definately possible.

it's also got a unique description. So if Kaelyn's axe goes missing and you see some guy running around with a glowing white battleaxe, rest assured it belongs to Kaelyn.

As far as i know...there aren't any glowing white battleaxes in game anyway....

My axe has a unique name and description and I realy, realy, realy like it. It is the description that does it for me...well also because it glows and that is very important too...but it is the description that realy gets to me!

Thanks again, in this case publically, to Tindertwiggy for taking the time to make that item, the hard part is living up to it!

(yes I burble about the axe ooc, IC Kaelyn is far more struggling with the whole gift concept, and what it means and so on...)

You well earned it mate from what I read in the DM boards.

People who request items as such, will probably never get one. People who RP out a bad situtation in character and without whinging, IMHO, will always be "flagged" for some loving by DM's and Team members alike.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post was that IC tenirra looks at it as when she tried to use her sword to close a vortex in the Giants lair in the hills of Tumult it somehow altered the Blessing that was on it frpm Dre'Ana or perhaps that Dre'Ana herself has changed it in someway.

It doesnt bother me one bit that I dont have a shiny sword anymore. It adds to the realism in some small way to not have one for me because I dont see myself as having truly earned it yet and that is a major motivating factor with Ten.
